Acupuncture for assisted fertility

Acupuncture is an option if you are planning for a family - whether you are using fertility treatments or if you want a more natural approach.

Acupuncture works by balancing the hormonal cycle, improving the sperm count, relieving stress, and provides optimum health for both partners prior to conception.

In the case of unexplained infertility, acupuncture can help with many of the gynaecological disorders which cause infertility such as endometriosis, amenorrhoea and disorders of ovulation, pelvic inflammatory diseases, dysmenorrhoea, and polycystic ovary syndrome. It can also help with male sub fertility/infertility by increasing the mobility and quality of the sperm.

Research into acupuncture and IVF shows that there is a higher percent chance of pregnancy, and more importantly, more babies born to those who have acupuncture. It has been shown that integrating Acupuncture into an IVF programme improves reproductive outcomes e.g. fewer miscarriages, fewer ectopics, more pregnancies, fewer multiples, and of course more babies!

When using Acupuncture for assisted fertility there is no set sequence of points used, but as with Acupuncture for general well-being, each person is unique therefore no two people would be treated exactly the same, and the number of treatments required depends on the individual. If undergoing IVF it is generally considered that the optimal number of treatments recommended for treating infertility averages 9, ideally starting 4 to 6 weeks before commencing treatment. If the infertiity is due to any of the gynaecological issues mentioned above, then ideally the treatment should cover 3 menstrual cycles.

When appropriate, we usually encourage both partners to attend for treatment if undergoing IVF because of the long development and maturation time of sperm (approximately 9 weeks). Events in a man’s life at the time of this development can therefore have an impact later on. For this reason lifestyle and dietary advice are also discussed.

An important aspect of the acupuncture treatment is the fact that it can help reduce some of the stress that inevitably arises when undergoing fertility treatments. Reports from clients confirm that as well as helping to relieve the stress at this time they have found their acupuncture sessions enjoyable and supportive.
