Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in the Far East for thousands of years. The philosophy behind the treatment is that our health is dependent upon the smooth and balanced flow of energy around the body. This energy which is called ‘Qi’ flows in channels or meridians, and it is when this energy is impaired that imbalance and illness can occur.

The flow of Qi can be disturbed in many ways: emotional upsets such as anxiety, fear, anger or grief, physical trauma, poor diet, overwork, hereditary factors or infections can all play a part in disturbing the smooth flow of the body’s energy. Although it is widely known for its use in pain relief, it is used to treat people with a wide range of conditions.

The main aim of acupuncture is to identify the underlying cause of the disturbance and how it has affected the person. Treating the patient as an individual is the principal aim of acupuncture and it is this treatment of the whole person which helps in rebalancing the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

Many people come for help with specific conditions such as addictions, anxiety, arthritis, athsma, back pain, circulatory problems, depression, facial paralysis, fibrositis, high blood pressure, inderterminate aches and pains, infertility, menstrual problems, migraines, rheumatism, sciatica, or skin conditions. It can also be used in pregnancy management and for the relief of pain in childbirth.

Some people come to acupuncture as a preventative measure to maintain optimum health or if they feel unwell in themselves without being ‘ill’ in the Western sense.

Acupuncture also includes other techniques such as moxibustion, cupping, or acupressure.
