Acupuncture is a Chinese healing system that has gained increasing support in the West as its effectiveness has been confirmed by clinical trials. The ancient philosophy behind treatment is that our health is dependent upon the harmonious flow of energy – called ‘Qi’ – around the body. Qi flows through channels called meridians, and it is when this flow is impaired that imbalance and illness can occur. Five Element Acupuncture is focused on restoring or maintaining harmony by allowing the Qi to move freely through the subtle network of meridians in the body.

The flow of Qi can be disrupted by, for example, emotions such as anxiety, fear, anger or grief, physical trauma, poor diet, overwork, hereditary factors or viral infections. The focus of the practitioner is to identify the underlying causes of disturbance and by inserting fine needles into specific acupuncture points, stimulate the body’s own healing response, encouraging and inviting it to restore a natural equilibrium.

Although acupuncture is most is widely known for its role in pain relief, it is used to treat conditions such as addiction, anxiety, arthritis, athsma, back pain, circulatory problems, depression, facial paralysis, fibrositis, high blood pressure, indeterminate aches and pains, infertility, menstrual problems, migraines, rheumatism, sciatica, andskin conditions. It can also be used in pregnancy management and for the relief of pain in childbirth.

Treating the whole person and prioritizing wellness, not just ‘the absence of disease’ is fundamental to Five Element Acupuncture. As a result, overall health and wellbeing is approached through working on the root cause of individual dis-ease, rather than treating isolated symptoms. Many people therefore choose to have regular preventative or maintenance acupuncture treatment to enhance their well-being and protect against ill health.

Acupuncture sessions may also includes related techniques such as moxibustion, cupping, or acupressure.
